Essential work to replace some of Nottingham’s tram track in the city centre is to get under way from Saturday 20 June.
Track between the Royal Centre and Old Market Square tram stops will be replaced to ensure tram services can continue to be provided safely and reliably.
The tracks for the first line of the tram network were laid over 16 years ago, with services running on them since March 2004. Track replacement is a standard part of tram network maintenance, and some sections that were laid at the same time have already been successfully replaced.
Preparatory works began on Saturday, May 30, taking place overnight and not affecting tram services. People living and working near the works have been sent information advising them of the dates and how they might be affected.
The main work will run from Saturday 20 June until Sunday 19 July, when track will be removed and replaced. Regular tram services will continue to run to and from the city centre.
Market Street will initially be closed to traffic, before reopening southbound for buses on 11 July, when Upper Parliament Street will be closed. Diversions will be signposted, and pedestrian access to businesses on Market Street will be maintained throughout the works.
The works will take slightly longer than originally planned to enable the contractor to adhere to social distancing guidance.
Mike Mabey, NET Operations Manager, said: “We’ve been operating for 16 years, and it has now become necessary to replace some of the older sections of track in the city centre so we can continue to operate a safe and reliable network, providing a comfortable journey for our customers.
“This work will take a little longer than originally planned so our contractor can stick to social distancing guidance, but the timing should mean it will disrupt fewer people given much lower numbers of passengers, traffic and city visitors than normal. Work will be completed as quickly as possible and noise prevention measures will be in place throughout the works, but we apologise for the inconvenience and any disruption it may cause.
“We would advise our passengers to allow some extra time for journeys and to visit our website for further information including timetable changes and latest advice on safe travel at this time. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding until full service resumes on Monday 20 July.”
