Track works – city centre

Last updated: Friday 10 July 2020

Important update – track works to finish early

Essential work to replace tram track between the Royal Centre and Old Market Square tram stops is to finish almost a week ahead of schedule.

The replacement work was due to be completed next Sunday (July 19) but the network will now reopen on Tuesday (July 14).

Contractors VolkerRail have worked closely with the City Council’s highways team to minimise the impact of the works while observing Government rules around Covid-19. Adjustments were made to the works programme through daily reviews and advice from other UK sites working under Covid-19 restrictions, bringing completion forward by six days.

A Sunday timetable will be in operation every day from Tuesday 14 July.

----

From time to time we have to carry out essential maintenance on our network.

Parts of the track in the city centre are around 16 years old, and need replacing to ensure we can continue to operate a safe and reliable network, providing a comfortable journey for our customers.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause, but our engineers will complete the work as quickly as they can.

We thank customers, local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding.

When?

Work starts on Saturday 20 June until Sunday 19 July. Full service will resume on Monday 20 July.

Where?

We’re replacing the tracks between Royal Centre and Old Market Square tram stops. It will still be possible to travel into the city centre by tram while the works are ongoing, alighting at Royal Centre from the north, and Nottingham Station from the south.

Please be aware:

  • There will be no service between Royal Centre and Nottingham Station
  • Old Market Square and Lace Market tram stops will be closed

Why are you doing these works now?

These works have been planned for several months, prior to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic being known. Unfortunately they could not be brought forward or postponed.

How has the coronavirus pandemic affected the works?

To enable our contractor to adhere to social distancing guidance, these works will take slightly longer than originally planned.

In addition, these guidelines will also affect the maximum number of people we can take on the replacement bus service, and we would encourage customers to walk the 15-20 minute journey across the city centre if they are able.

How will this affect me?

Tram customers

There will be no service between Royal Centre and Nottingham Station from 20 June until 19 July inclusive.

This means:

  • Trams from Hucknall and Phoenix Park will terminate at Royal Centre
  • Trams from Clifton South and Toton Lane will terminate at Nottingham Station
  • Old Market Square and Lace Market tram stops will be closed
  • A revised timetable will be in operation

  • A dedicated replacement bus service will run every 7-10 minutes between Royal Centre and Nottingham Station.

Please allow some additional time for your journey

In light of the current social distancing guidelines, where possible we would encourage customers to walk, instead of using the bus. The walk between Royal Centre and Nottingham Station takes around 15-20 minutes.

Customers should continue to follow the recommendations in place to help them stay safe when using the tram.

Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for the latest updates during the works.

Full service will resume on Monday 20 July.

Motorists

To enable the works to take place, road closures will be in force on Market Street and Upper Parliament Street:

  • Market Street closure, both lanes, Saturday 20 June to Sunday 5 July inclusive
  • Upper Parliament Street closure (Market Street open to buses on southbound lane), Monday 6 July to Sunday 19 July

Diversions will be signposted. Footways and pedestrian access to properties will remain open at all times during the works.

Please note these dates may be subject to change – updates will be posted here and publicised through our social media channels.

Residents

In addition to the main works, preparatory works will take place overnight from Saturday 30 May until Saturday 20 June. People living near the works should have received a leaflet advising them of the dates and how they might be affected. If you believe you will be impacted by the works but have not received this, please contact our customer service team on 0115 824 6060 or info@thetram.net

Noise prevention measures will be in place throughout the works, but residents may experience some disruption and we apologise for this and thank you for your understanding.

Businesses

Footways and pedestrian access to businesses will remain open throughout the works.

Preparatory works will take place overnight from Saturday 30 May until Saturday 20 June. Local businesses have been informed and we will continue to keep businesses updated as work progresses. If you believe your business will be impacted by the works but have not received any information from us, please contact our customer service team on 0115 824 6060 or info@thetram.net
