Today (Monday, November 18) marks the start of National Road Safety Week and the city’s tram network is playing its part with the relaunch of a video that’s already attracted tens of thousands of views online.
The short film features accidents and near misses caught on CCTV and urges motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to take care in areas of the city where trams operate, illustrating the importance of following traffic signals and road markings.
Although nobody was seriously hurt in the incidents shown, they did result in significant disruption to tram services and inconvenience for NET customers and other road users.
Mike Mabey, Head of Operations at NET, explained: “The tram is one of the safest forms of transport, but we’re never complacent when it comes to further reducing the risk of accidents.
“The majority of incidents we experience involve cars and vans at junctions where the tram has the right of way, and we would urge all motorists to take extra care around these intersections.”
Road Safety Week is the UK's biggest road safety initiative, coordinated annually by Brake, the road safety charity and further information can be found at https://www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk
