Nottingham has a world-class tram network to be proud of a local light rail advisory body has heard today (Tuesday).
NET’s Head of Operations Mike Mabey told members of the Greater Nottingham Light Rapid Transit Advisory Committee: “This week we’re marking 15 years since trams returned to the streets of Nottingham and the network hasn’t stopped improving.
“We’re carrying more passengers than ever before and, alongside other light rail operators, we’re posting some of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the public transport industry.
“We’re proud to be delivering a high-class service and we hope the city is proud too. Of course there’s always room to improve still further but, generally, day in day out our dedicated team is out there helping to keep the city on the move.”
Reporting impressive reliability figures, he added: “We run over 950 tram journeys every day and, overall, we recorded 97.9 per cent reliability between November and January, a significant improvement on the same period in previous years.”
He explained that a series of innovative campaigns had continued to drive service improvements and by reaching out to the general public through the use of video and social media, the award-winning network had also seen reductions in the number of services disrupted by incidents beyond the NET’s control.
Mike said: “Throughout 2018 we ran a number of multi-media campaigns under the banner of We’re Safer Together, and they’ve certainly had an impact. Year-on-year we’ve seen fewer collisions and track incursions and we hope this continues to be the case.
“Of course, it’s not possible to prevent all incidents involving third parties and we’ve invested heavily in the very latest virtual reality simulators to add to our drivers’ abilities to respond to the unexpected.
“At the same time, we’ve stepped up our customer communications to provide real-time information when there’s an incident or a maintenance issue, helping our passengers to plan their journeys.”
The initiatives have received recognition from the wider industry at the Global Light Rail Awards and NET is committed to further enhancing the customer experience.
Mike added: “Through careful planning of services, investment in technology and our fleet and an ongoing commitment to putting the customer first we’re continually planning for the future.
“Nottingham’s tram network is widely regarded as one of the country’s highest performing light rail systems and, as we celebrate a 15 year-old success story, we’re determined to keep it that way.”
