Tram Network Forms New Community Partnership
19 June 2017
Nottingham’s tram network is forging a new partnership with an organisation which promotes community cohesion and integration in the local area.

Based near David Lane, Communities Inc is a dynamic not-for-profit social enterprise which aims to break down barriers and empower both individuals and organisations within black and minority ethnic groups.

The partnership, established by NET’s operating company Nottingham Trams Limited, is aiming to help promote awareness and recognition of issues arising from hate crime. Part of the initiative will see tram staff provided with training to help spot, prevent and report discriminatory behaviour across the network.

A kiosk at the Clifton South park & ride centre has also been transformed into a ‘community hub’ from which Communities Inc will operate many activities within the area.

Chris Williams, NET’s Commercial Manager, oversees the tram’s community partnerships and explained: “Whilst reports of discrimination on our network are very rare, we feel that it is important to help promote equality on public transport and across all walks of life.

“Our tramway spreads across Nottingham and we’re committed to providing support to communities in the local area. This partnership is one of many initiatives we’re involved with and we look forward to announcing more in the near future.”

NET is set to support the organisation at a number of upcoming events including Nottingham Pride in July and the Hyson Green Cultural Festival in August, whilst trams will also carry its information leaflets and literature.

Michael Henry, Communities Inc Director says, ‘It’s great working with NET as we are able to reach large sections of the community and provide them with information aimed at making Nottingham a more welcoming city.”
