Fifty Million Passengers Journeys

NET Line One, Nottingham’s existing tram network, will carry its 50 millionth passenger on Tuesday 9 June.

Cllr Jane Urquhart (Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Area Working) says: “The 50 million tram trips demonstrate what a success NET Line One has been. The tram has helped to put Nottingham firmly on the map as a dynamic, modern city which boasts excellent public transport. The proposals for NET Phase Two will build on this success bringing even more benefits to the city and region.”

The success of the existing tram infrastructure has also demonstrated that investment in fixed transport links provides a focus for development and the regeneration and renewal of surrounding areas.

NET Line One facts:

• Around 10 million tram trips a year
• Has a 92 per cent customer satisfaction rate
• Contributed to a 20 per cent increase in peak period public transport use in the north-west corridor into the city centre.
• Generated £100million of new money for the East Midlands economy.
• At a cost of £200 million it was one of the largest and most innovative PFI (private finance initiative) funded projects
• Has encouraged industrial and commercial developments in Nottingham and Hucknall.

In March, Government ministers granted the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) for the proposed NET Phase Two extensions to Clifton and Chilwell via Beeston.

The TWAO gives the joint promoters - Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council - the legal powers to acquire the land, build and operate NET Phase Two.
