Tram 5th Birthday Party is a success!

Children at the Trams 5th birthdayThe fifth birthday of the tram in Nottingham has been celebrated by setting a new world record* for the most high fives in an hour by one person.  413 people gave BBC’s Des Coleman a high five – beating the previous record by five – as part of the celebrations to wish the tram a happy birthday.

Children from five local primary schools – Scotholme, Mellors, St Mary’s Catholic, Seagrave and Aspley Wood along, with players from Nottingham Rugby team, representatives from Arrow who operate the tram and the City Council along with members of the public, helped Des break the record in the Market Square.  They were also entertained by performances from local gymnasts, the Flying Angels and county champion cheerleaders from Chilwell School.

As part of the festivities, raffle prizes were also given away for tickets to see Westside Story and Riverdance at the Royal Centre during March and April and tickets for a Nottingham Rugby match on 15 March.

Afterwards in the Council House, many people and businesses involved helping make the tram a success gathered for speeches by several key guests, including Mark Fowles, chairman of Arrow.  A specially created birthday cake in the shape of a tram was cut by the mayor of Nottingham, and footage filmed by Diploma students at Djanogly City Academy students was screened of high fives in city locations.

High five world record breakerDuring the weeks leading up to the event advertising started appearing throughout the city, including billboards, posters, banners and a specially wrapped tram in a high five design.
